The Ceremony of 2320

In 2320, Capella IV held a ceremonial reaffirmation of the Federation mining agreements. Among the dignitaries attending was Pavel Chekov and Leonard McCoy, two of the surviving officers who had served under Captain Kirk.  Chekov now an elderly Federation official, was one of the few who continued to appear at public ceremonies and diplomatic functions.
For Greth, meeting both men felt like meeting a living link to the stories he had grown up hearing. It was during this meeting, that he caught the interest of Chekov, who spoke with him at length during the three day event. He shared memories of the Enterprise and of the ideals that shaped Starfleet. In Greth he recognised a familiar spark, the same restless ambition he had once carried as a young officer. Before they parted, Chekov asked Greth a simple question that would alter the course of the young mans life forever.
“Is this the life you want, or is there something more you hope to become?”
Greth returned to the Kallias Clan with a new sense of purpose. He struggled with the expectations of tradition, but his elder brother surprised him with support. He told Greth that honor was not found only in leadership, but in courage, and that Greth’s courage lay in seeking his own future.
With his family’s blessing, Greth applied to the Federation’s outreach program for protectorate worlds. Acceptance into Starfleet Academy was not guaranteed. Capellans were known for strength and honor, but not for diplomacy or academic discipline. Greth would have to work hard to prove he could adapt.

Greth was born into the Kallias Clan, a respected warrior house known for discipline, loyalty and a strict sense of honor. As the younger of two brothers, he grew up knowing that clan leadership would pass to his elder sibling. This was the natural order of Capellan society, but it left Greth with a quiet awareness that his future would always be defined by supporting another’s path rather than leading his own.
He trained in the martial traditions expected of him, yet he was unusually thoughtful and curious. Greth listened closely to the stories told within the clan about the first contact with the Federation, the visit of Captain James T. Kirk and the forging of the mining agreements. These stories were part of Capellan identity, but for Greth they became something more. They stirred a desire to see the wider galaxy and to shape a life not limited by birth order.
The tales of Kirk and the Enterprise were passed down amongst the tribes, Greth imagined the stars and the worlds beyond Capella. He imagined a life where he could stand on his own merits. The stories planted a seed that would eventually grow into a calling.

Starfleet Academy

At the Academy, Greth faced cultural challenges but excelled in areas that drew on his Capellan upbringing. He performed strongly in tactical studies, survival training and close‑quarters combat. He also developed a growing interest in xenocultural studies. As the only Cappellan at the academy, Greth was constantly face by the challenges of his heritage and the cultural divide between himself and those around him. Acting both as his sponsor and mentor, Chekov guided Greth through the first two years of his academic life.
Instructors described him as loyal, direct and thoughtful. He showed an unusual ability to balance strength with restraint, a quality that made him stand out among his peers.
Command of the USS Shakti
Greth’s steady rise through Starfleet eventually led to his appointment as captain of the USS Shakti, an Obena‑class starship assigned to diplomatic and frontier‑stabilisation missions. Under Greth’s command, the Shakti became known for its ability to defuse crises before they escalated. Officers who served with him often remarked that he could silence a room with a single look, yet he listened more than he spoke.

The Vash–Tal’ren Crisis

Greth’s defining moment as captain came during the violent conflict between the Vash and the Tal’ren, two insectoid species locked in a long‑standing territorial and cultural struggle. When the conflict erupted into open warfare, the Shakti was dispatched to stabilise the region.
The situation deteriorated quickly. Both sides mobilised fleets. Border colonies were attacked. The Federation feared a war that could engulf multiple sectors.

The Kethar Expanse Standoff
When both fleets converged on the disputed region, Greth made the bold decision of ordering the USS Shakti directly between the two armadas. Though his ship was ill equipped for combat, Greth gambled that neither side would be willing to risk hitting a Federation Starship. The move stunned both sides long enough to allow Greth to address both leaders, with the calm authority of a Capellan warrior and a Starfleet captain. He made it clear that if either side fired, they would strike a Federation vessel first. But he also acknowledged their grievances and their history, pointing out that nothing would be gained if both sides annihilated the other.
The Shakti Accords
Greth proposed a joint arbitration council aboard the Shakti itself. Against all expectations, both sides agreed. The negotiations were tense and often volatile, but Greth guided them with unwavering resolve. After twelve days, the Shakti Accords were signed, establishing a neutral zone and a shared‑resource agreement that ended the conflict without a single shot fired.
The Accords became a model for future Federation mediation efforts involving species who had only recently attained warp travel.

Promotion to Admiral
Greth’s success aboard the USS Shakti, particularly his leadership during the Vash–Tal’ren crisis, earned him widespread respect within Starfleet. His ability to balance strength with diplomacy made him a natural candidate for higher command. After several years of distinguished service, Starfleet Command promoted him to Rear Admiral and assigned him to Starfleet Operations, where he oversaw frontier‑stabilisation initiatives and interstellar crisis response.
In this role, Greth became known for his calm strategic mind and his ability to read political tensions with the same clarity he once demonstrated as a Starship Captain.
During his early years as a flag officer, Greth developed a close professional friendship with Admiral Kathryn Janeway. Their bond formed quickly: both had reputations for bold decisions and each understood the weight of responsibility that came with leadership.
Janeway respected Greth’s ability to see the heart of a conflict, whether political or personal. Greth admired Janeway’s resilience and her unwavering commitment to her crew. A friendship built on mutual respect, shared experience and understanding.
A year after the USS Sirius returned from its unexpected journey into the Delta Quadrant, Janeway approached Greth with a personal request. The Sirius and her crew had survived extraordinary circumstances, but the experience had left its mark. Captain Jorin, newly returned to Federation space, was still adjusting to the political landscape, the expectations of Starfleet Command and the weight of decisions made far from home. Janeway believed Jorin needed a steady hand, someone who understood what it meant to lead under pressure, to make impossible choices and to return changed. She chose Greth. The return of the Sirius was anything but simple. Using technology salvaged from a Borg corpse in the Delta Quadrant, the crew accessed the transwarp network and forced a path back to Federation space. The attempt succeeded—but at a cost. The aging Miranda-class vessel could not withstand the strain. Moments after emerging in the Alpha Quadrant, the Sirius suffered a catastrophic warp core breach. Most of the crew escaped, but not all. Those who survived returned in shock, carrying both trauma and loss.

Their arrival was met with celebration across the Federation, but it was quickly overshadowed by investigation. Within weeks, Captain Jorin faced court-martial on charges including reckless endangerment and the destruction of a starship. Admiral Edward Jellico led the criticism, arguing Jorin had violated Starfleet protocol through unacceptable risk. In contrast, Admiral Kathryn Janeway defended him, emphasising that survival in the Delta Quadrant demanded decisions no officer in Federation space could fairly judge. Her testimony proved decisive: the charges were reduced, and Jorin retained his commission, though his advancement prospects were effectively ended.

Recognising the strain on both Jorin and his crew, Janeway turned to Greth. She believed his experience and temperament made him uniquely suited to guide a captain returning from such extraordinary circumstances. Greth accepted without hesitation.
In the months that followed, Greth provided steady counsel, helping Jorin navigate Starfleet politics, public scrutiny, and the psychological aftermath of the mission. With Greth’s support, Jorin was gradually reframed—not as a liability, but as a survivor of impossible conditions.

The story of the Sirius captured the Federation’s imagination, becoming a symbol of endurance in the shadow of the Dominion War. With Greth’s quiet advocacy, Starfleet recognised both the practical and symbolic value of that narrative. Jorin was granted command of the Sirius-A, a Nebula-class starship, offering both him and his crew a chance at renewal.
